Moody Street Photography - China Town - 10am-12pm
Photography is all about playing with light, but for this session we're taking things a little darker. We'll be exploring the dark, moody and black&white side to photography, as we wind our way through the China Town area and create some hauntingly atmospheric shots with light and shadow. Great chance to add some interesting and different shots to your own portfolio!

We have a different photo theme each fortnight and the two hour sessions take place in different outdoor locations across Sydney. Great opportunity to try something new with the guidance of a professional photographer, and come away with some new shots for your portfolio or album.

Complete beginner? We recommend starting with the Photography for Beginners Class, which is a 3 hour structured workshop where you’ll learn the basics of using your camera with more 1-on-1 time with the instructor.

Looking to learn more? Come along to the group sessions, which are more casual and informal than other workshops, and with more time to take photos and put your new skills into practice.

What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

What’s involved? Each session starts with an introduction to the fortnight’s theme, and the photography instructor will chat about the camera settings and techniques to use. You’ll then have time to take lots of photos, with the instructor present to answer any questions. You’ll receive feedback and have a chance to chat with everyone to share tips and ideas. We’re a social bunch!

Join the Sydney Photography Facebook Group here to share your photos after the session and to take part in our free, fortnightly competitions!

4.7/5 from 223 reviews
Yesterday was the first Sydney Photography Group event that I had attended. I thought that it was great! I was initially surprised by the structure with its ‘challenges’ and basically being told to go away for 45 minutes and take some photos. But after getting over the shock, I had a great time. I enjoyed having to once again look at the world in a different way and think about what I might shoot. I found Zac’s feedback constructive and valuable. I came away from the morning reviewing what I had learnt and found that I had learnt quite a few things. All-in-all a most enjoyable way to spend a morning! I look forward to attending future sessions.

Good location, friendly crowd, interesting challenges.

I loved having challenges set and being able to just go at own pace to try and meet the challenge. I liked that we didn’t stay all together as we took photos. Being able to go off and use our creativity and then meet up for critiquing was relaxing and fun. It was great having experts available to help with questions and get tips from. They were encouraging and it motivated me to get out and shoot more.

Scott did well for his first time in backup lead role! With such a wide interpretation of urban photography, it was good to get some challenges to look for as well as some motivational advice. Nice to see some more newbies joining the regulars!

First time with Zac leading the group, he did a great job and he assistant. They both where interacting with the group, all morning. We meant 15 minutes before it finished and reviewed the photos we took with Zac, he was super friendly and helpful.

Zac Alviz was a good instructor. I liked that he set specific challenges and spent time with each of us to review some of our shots.

Zac, our photography host, was excellent. He set us a couple of challenges and gave us some extremely helpful tips. He gave us the chance for a brief discussion and share our best work with the group halfway through the event and again at the very end. While this event is not meant to be a lesson, we do want to come away from these events having learned something new, either from the host or each other, that will ultimately make us better photographers. Zac definitely provided the energy & space for that opportunity, despite the intense heat of the day.

Was a great inspirational 2 hours... Zac Alviz was an excellent teacher/adviser. Will be doing a session again, but hopefully NOT in that sort of heat!
